Tara Homes for Children, NGO for street children in Delhi, India

The children

Tara shelters street children and abandoned children whose families have experienced extreme difficulties. In many cases the children have lost one or both parents. They are sent to Tara by the Child Welfare Committee. In Tara, protected against child labour and abuse, they live in a non-violent environment where enough individual attention is given to each and every one and where an emphasis is put on their education.

The Tara Tots, Section “Peanuts”
The new comers. They are still too small or not ready for school, the baby judo class and the complex choreographies of their elders the Cubs! But they have their own teacher who comes every morning to conduct a Montessori class. During one hour, they put the blue eggs in the blue basket, pile up legos and thread wooden pearls and other exciting manual activities which leave them literally exhausted. But with two fully deserved naps a day, they have the time to recover.

The Tara Tots, Section “Cubs”
The guys have a ‘Ben 10’ schoolbag. The ladies are more inclined towards Hannah Montana. Every morning, they leave the Peanuts at home, take their lunch box and head for school, the wonderful preschool Santa Maria, an integrated learning environment centred around a marvellous garden where they learn sign language, sports and arts and also how to communicate with gooses and turkeys. In the afternoon, they come back for lunch, sing, dance, practice yoga and baby judo, as well as a vast variety of mischief until dusk. They go to bed at 7.30pm to the sound of Buddhist chants.

When they get back home, they don't hesitate to impress the peanuts and cubs with their brand new knowledge.

The Tara Girls, Section “Sparrows”
Hardcore fans of the classical Indian dance Bharata natyam, the sparrows get up at dawn to put on their smart school uniforms, wriggling with impatience to get to school thanks to their magic van. Lunch hour is here, and the sparrows quickly return to their nest Tara Girls, where sport, music and colouring are the order of the afternoon. In the evening, a few words from a bedtime story (with, of course, the obligatory princess!) Enough to plunge them all into the sleep of Sleeping Beauty.

The Tara Girls, Section “Parrots”
From the age of 10, our little sparrows grow stronger in the shape of bigger birds: the colorful parrots with a strong beak! They perfect their mastery of not only Bharatanatyam and all sports, but also English; Their own special talents and personalities start to assert themselves, and the young ladies become increasingly aware of their femininity. Having become stronger birds, they mother the sparrow sisters and like to be example to them; little by little they acquire a sense of responsibility and also get a taste of more freedom such as going to bed a little later than the younger ones.

The Tara Boys, Section “Smalls”
The Small Section of Tara Boys is a serious place where one gets proper training for various glorious destinies, such as Super-Hero, Astronaut or Policeman. Up on their feet early morning, the Smalls still have the chance to have their school uniform washed and pressed for them. But they have to tidy their bedroom and toys (sorry, their accessories for magic and cosmic battles). Back from school, they get individual help for their homework, they draw with passion and model clay considerably. Then, they spend what is left of their energy in one daily hour of sport. At dusk, one volunteer comes to read them a story and it sometimes happens to find one of the super-heroes deeply asleep with a thumb in his mouth...

The Tara Boys, Section “Mediums”
Because they have an age with two digits, they have been promoted to the rank of Medium, crucial Breakthrough in the life of a Citizen where you are given more rights (here, more TV on Saturday) but also more responsibilities (housework, including washing and pressing their own clothes). At this age, the boys generally drop their agenda to become a Super Hero for a less risky and more settled future, Scientist or Computer Engineer, which shows that kids too get wiser when they age. It is also the last stage of their life where this strange species that are women is considered totally uninteresting.

The Tara Boys, Section “Teens”
Ah teenage. Pimples and love poems written shivering at the glow of the candles, desire to change the world rather than yourself, perpetual revolt against everything and anything, never ending debates with the adult to explain to him that no, the sky is not blue. And most important: regular and compulsory genuflexions in front of the God FaceBook.

The Tara Big Birds
Having passed grade 12, the big birds start flying their own wings, towards a university or a vocational training. They remain associated to Tara under our post-care program but they leave the home. They give their seat to a new generation, as well as souvenirs of laughter and tears. In their hearts, an urge to test their forces and travel along the globe. When they come back to Tara to visit their friends, they make them dream by telling them all about their crazy adventures.
